Third hearing on the QEUH starts

Date 15th August 2024

The Scottish Hospitals Inquiry will continue its hearings next week in relation to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow.

The hearing begins on 19 August and is scheduled to run until 15 November 2024.

This third hearing will take evidence from five groups of witnesses:

  • Estates staff of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and contractors involved in the construction and commissioning of the project.
  • Clinicians, including those involved in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC).
  • Communications.
  • The expert panel of the 2021 Case Notes Review.
  • The panel of independent experts appointed by the Inquiry.

The Inquiry will examine the extent that non-compliance with relevant regulations and guidance led to ventilation and water contamination issues at the Glasgow hospital. This hearing will also explore the actions taken to resolve these issues after the handover in 2015 and the extent of their effectiveness.

During the first Glasgow hearing in 2021, Lord Brodie, the Chair of the Inquiry, heard evidence about the physical, emotional, and other impacts on patients and families. The second Glasgow hearing in 2023 heard from clinicians and those directly involved with patients.

Commenting on the scope of this hearing, Lord Brodie said “In this hearing we are taking forward the themes and questions arising from the evidence of patients and clinicians before the Inquiry to understand whether and how they were linked to the building systems. We are also seeking to understand whether the right of patients and families to be informed and involved in the matters relating to their treatment was respected.”

The public hearing will be streamed live on our YouTube Channel.

The timetable for week one (19 to 23 August 2024) is available on the Hearing page
